Salihundam is a historically significant Buddhist archaeological site located on the south bank of the Vamsadhara River in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. Set on a scenic hillock, the site contains the remains of ancient Buddhist stupas, a monastic complex, chaityagriha, sculptures and other archaeological structures.
The site was first identified by Gidugu Venkata Rama Murthy in 1919. Archaeological excavations revealed relic caskets, stupas, sculptures and other remains associated with different phases of Buddhism, including Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. The remains are generally dated from around the 2nd century BCE to the 12th century CE, making Salihundam an important destination for understanding the long history of Buddhism in ancient Kalinga and coastal Andhra.
Its hilltop setting also provides scenic views of the surrounding landscape and the Vamsadhara River, making Salihundam appealing to visitors interested in archaeology, history, Buddhist heritage and photography.
